How learning about individual animals can uproot our exploitative actions: From the Founders of Luvin Arms

Following a tour of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary in CO, drJina had the opportunity to learn from the founders of Luvin Arms how individual animals can tell us their stories, if we take the time to listen. Connecting with these animals can profoundly move us and shift our consumptive patterns. Only by changing our demand for animal products and ceasing to treat them like factories can we move the world in a more compassionate direction. Sanctuaries can play a big role in what Sarah Taylor, author and advocate, said at the 2019 JAINA convention about “inducing an epiphany”, that shift in consciousness that enables people to make big changes in their lifestyle.

Among the many meaningful and beautiful pieces of art at Luvin Arms, I was really struck by this mural reminding visitors of the value of sea beings. How thoughtful to display this art where it isn’t possible (on land) to directly connect with these living beings, instead harnessing our imagination to inspire care.

Clicker play is a type of communication that Luvin Arms Sanctuary uses to build trust between animals and people. Some examples and an explanation follow.

Here are some examples with two different Luvin Arms residents:

Spiritual Lessons from Animals: From Preetirang Sanctuary

Vegan Jains appreciate the embodiment of ahimsa in people of all faiths, including the sister traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism. Madhulika and her husband run a small sanctuary in CA, flying under the radar of the farmers around her. On former hunting grounds, they support cows, chickens, goats and other animals, in the hot and dry Northern CA environment. We had the opportunity to tour the sanctuary, speak to her and hear her sing soothing Indian songs to the animals in her care. What a treat! And an inspiration. Photos below. In the video she explains how caring for the animals is spiritual service, consistent with the Hindu teaching that all living beings are a family (Vasudhaiva Kutambukam) and how they teach her great lessons of love, forgiveness and trust.

Show your compassion this Thanksgiving by supporting animals at your local panjrapols!

Animal sanctuaries in the US, like panjrapols in India, protect, feed, and provide medical care to farm animals.  They

  • Rescue animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chicken, turkeys and rabbits that would have been killed for food
  • Educate people and promote vegetarianism
  • Support laws that reduce animal suffering
  • During events such as Thanskgiving they heighten awareness of animal slaughter and hold events to instead support these animals

If you’d like to help, you can

  • Visit them in person
    • Animal Place is in Grass Valley, northern CA.
    • Harvest Home Sanctuary is near Stockton, CA
    • Farm Sanctuary is in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA.
    • THere are many other worthy organizations throughout the US but our familiarity is more with the ones in CA
  • You can send a check or donate online directly to the organization.
